2015 Hall of Fame Inductee – Bernadette A. Ferraro

Pathology Researcher, Microscopist, Diagnostician, Lecturer, and Biomedical Writer

H.E. Lady (Dr). Bernadette A. Ferraro, O.S.i., is a lifelong resident of Nutley. She
is the daughter of the late Dominic Ferraro, and Josephine (Mossucco) Ferraro.
ln 1970, she was graduated from The Lacordaire Academy, where she received
her diploma of First Honors. From 1.970 -1,974, she attended Rutgers University
majoring In Zoology with Pre-medical requisites. At Rutgers University, she was a
Dean’s List student, and member of the Rutgers Chapter of the Tri-Beta Biological
Honor Society. After graduation, she was accepted into the University of Medicine
and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNI), where her research interests included the
pathologies of pulmonary carcinomas and brain tumors.

Post graduate positions she held, were Education and Program Coordinator at
(UMDNJ) Department of Pathology. Her responsibilities were Lecturer in Pathology
and lnstructor in Pathology Laboratory Methods. As a result of her research
interests and data collection, biomedical writing became an important part of her
diverse professional repertoire.

After holding positions as Pathology Lecturer and Clinical Diagnostician at
(UMNDJ), and University Hospital, Lady Bernadette entered the joint Program at
Old Dominion University (ODU) and Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in
Norfolk, Virginia. Here she received her M.S., in Medical Laboratory Sciences, and
Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences while simultaneously teaching as a Professor. She also
gained proficiency in the use of the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), and
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEIV) thereby becoming an ultrastructuralist.

Lady Bernadette has an extensive history of charitable affiliations. At 15, she began
as a volunteer at Clara Maass Memorial Hospital, working in both the Clinical
Chemistry and Pathology Laboratories. Her humanitarian horizons expanded to
include international charitable giving by volunteering for The Nargis Dutt Memorial
Foundation, a charity dedicated to providing much needed medical equipment to
fight cancer in the lndian subcontinent. Determined to help disabled physicians,
scientists, medical, and graduate students achieve their professional goals, H.E.
Lady (Dr.) Bernadette A. Ferraro, O.S.J., established and founded The Ferraro
Foundation for Science and The Disabled (FFSD) in 1997. Due to her extensive
charitable activities, H.E. Lady (Dr.) Bernadette A. Ferraro, O.S.J., was elevated to
full royal honors into the Hospitaller Order of St. John Knights of Malta in 1994.

Her memberships in professional societies include: The NY. Academy of Sciences,
The American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of
Clinical Pathologists, American Society of Cytopathology, The Dana Alliance for
Brain lnitiatives, and the Wilson Center for Strategic and lnternational Studies
(Washington, D.C.).
