Retired Chairman of the Board, Merck & Company, Inc.
John Lloyd Huck spent his early years in Nutley, New Jersey and graduated from Nutley High School in 1940. During World War II, he was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a flight instructor and then as pilot on B-17 and B-29 bombers.
He graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry in 1946 and began his illustrious career as a research chemist for Hoffmann LaRoche in Nutley.
Mr. Huck joined the Merck Sharp & Dohme Division of Merck & Co., Inc. in November 1958 as Director of Marketing. He was elected Vice President for Marketing Planning in January 1966 and subsequently its Vice President for Sales and Marketing, Executive Vice President and President of the Division in 1973.
He was elected a Senior Vice President of Merck & Co., Inc. in March 1975. Executive Vice President in 1977, President and Chief Operating Officer in 1978 and Chairman of the board in 1985. He retired June 30, 1986.
Mr. Huck joined the Board of Nova Pharmaceutical Corporation in 1986 where he served for several years as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and retired from the Board in 1991.
He has served on the Board of Directors of Amstar Corp., AMF, Armco, Inc. and the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co. where he was also Chairman of the Board.
Mr. Huck is Trustee Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of The Pennsylvania State University and a past President of that Board. He is past President of its Alumni Association, and an Alumni Fellow of the College of Medicine and the College of Science.
He is past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Morristown (New Jersey) Memorial Hospital, a member of the Morristown Memorial Foundation, a Trustee of the Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge Foundation and a former Trustee of the Association of Governing Boards. He is listed in Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care.
Mr. Huck was born July 17, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York. He married the former Dorothy B. Foehr of Philadelphia in 1943. Mr. Huck and his wife have a son, Lloyd E., and two daughters, Jeanne L. and Virginia A. Mr. Huck still flies his Cirrus airplane three times a week.
